1 How to Set a Live Wallpaper on Windows with DesktopHut Studio

Works with any DesktopHut video wallpaper, in about a minute — no editing required.

  1. Install DesktopHut Studio

    Grab it from our software page — Microsoft Store, direct installer, or portable .zip, whichever you prefer. The installer contains only the DesktopHut app itself; see our Trust & Safety page if you want the details.

  2. Add a wallpaper to your library

    Download any video wallpaper from DesktopHut, then in the app's My Wallpapers tab use Add Video to import the file. You can also add a YouTube link, an HTML wallpaper pack, or a .dh scene the same way.

  3. Choose a display and apply it

    Click the wallpaper's card to open its detail panel. Pick a monitor from the Apply to Display dropdown — or Span all displays to stretch one scene across every monitor — then click Set as Wallpaper. It's live on your desktop immediately.

  4. Fine-tune it (optional)

    The Properties panel underneath lets you adjust fit, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and playback speed in real time, without needing to re-apply anything.

Multiple monitors? Every display can run its own wallpaper independently, or you can pick Span all displays to play one continuous scene edge-to-edge across all of them. Unplug a monitor and its wallpaper is remembered — it comes back automatically when you reconnect that same screen.

Windows troubleshooting

Windows shows a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen during install

That's Microsoft SmartScreen, and it appears on any new, small-publisher app that hasn't yet built up install volume — it isn't a virus warning. Click More info, then Run anyway. It only shows once per version.

My antivirus quarantined the app, or flagged mpv.exe

Video playback runs through a small bundled player component (mpv), and some antivirus heuristics flag any unfamiliar .exe that draws directly onto the desktop. Restore it from quarantine and add the app's install folder as an exclusion in your antivirus settings.

The wallpaper isn't showing, or the screen is black

On a laptop with two graphics cards (integrated + dedicated), the app and the video player can end up rendering on different GPUs. Open Display settings → Graphics, add DesktopHut Studio under Custom options for apps, and set it to your dedicated GPU, then restart the app. If that's not it, try reselecting the wallpaper and clicking Set as Wallpaper again — that alone fixes most one-off glitches.

My wallpaper is stuttering or my fans spin up

Turn on Low Resource Mode, lower the Quality tier, or set an FPS limit (30fps looks the same as 60fps for most wallpapers and roughly halves the decode cost) — all under Settings → Performance.

Does this work on Windows 7 or 8?

No — the technique used to attach a wallpaper behind your desktop icons requires Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).

2 How to Set a Live Wallpaper on Android with the DesktopHut App

No system settings menus to dig through — the app opens the wallpaper picker for you.

  1. Install the DesktopHut Android app

    Download it free from Google Play.

  2. Find a wallpaper you like

    Browse by category or search from the home screen, then tap a wallpaper to open it.

  3. Tap "Set Live Wallpaper"

    On the wallpaper's page, tap Set Live Wallpaper. The app downloads it and opens Android's own wallpaper picker automatically — just confirm there to finish.

  4. Prefer a still image instead?

    Use Set Image instead — you'll get a quick choice between filling the screen (cropped) or fitting the whole frame, and whether to apply it to your home screen, lock screen, or both.

Want it to change automatically? The app's Schedule tab can rotate through your downloaded or favorited wallpapers on a timer, so your wallpaper refreshes on its own without you doing anything.

3 How to Set a Live Wallpaper with Wallpaper Engine

DesktopHut's video wallpapers also work fine here — this is the paid Steam option ($3.99).

  1. Get Wallpaper Engine on Steam

    It's a one-time purchase on the Steam Store, and it runs in the background once installed.

  2. Open Wallpaper Engine and import your file

    Download a video wallpaper from DesktopHut, then in Wallpaper Engine choose Open Local Wallpaper File (or drag the video straight into the app window) to import it.

  3. Apply it to your monitor

    Double-click the wallpaper in your library to set it as active. Wallpaper Engine also lets you assign different wallpapers per monitor if you have more than one.

4 How to Set a Live Wallpaper with Lively Wallpaper

Open source and completely free — a solid alternative if you'd rather not use the Microsoft Store or Steam.

  1. Download and install Lively Wallpaper

    It's free and open source — get it from the official Lively Wallpaper website.

  2. Add your DesktopHut wallpaper

    Download a video wallpaper from DesktopHut, then in Lively click + Add Wallpaper (or just drag the video file into the Lively window).

  3. Click to apply

    Select the wallpaper from your Lively library to set it live on your desktop.

DesktopHut doesn't have a native Mac build yet, so on macOS we recommend Wallspace.

  1. Download Wallspace for macOS

    Get it from wallspace.app — it requires macOS 15.0 or later.

  2. Import your DesktopHut wallpaper

    Download a video wallpaper from DesktopHut, then add it to Wallspace as a new wallpaper.

  3. Apply it

    Select it in Wallspace to set it as your live desktop background. Wallspace supports lock-screen wallpapers and multiple displays as well.

Will a live wallpaper slow down my computer or drain my battery?

DesktopHut Studio is built to be lightweight, and automatically pauses whenever a game or app goes fullscreen, your screen locks, or your PC sleeps — so it never competes with what you're actually using your computer for. If you're on a laptop, you can also enable Low Resource Mode.

Do I need to download DesktopHut's own software to use DesktopHut wallpapers?

No. Every wallpaper on DesktopHut is a standard video file, so it works with our own free software, Wallpaper Engine, Lively Wallpaper, and Wallspace for macOS. Use whichever player you already have installed.
